I have run the trails at Veteran's Park a several times since the tornadoes of April 27th struck Birmingham. Fortunately the park and it's trails sustained no significant damage. The first round of tornadoes that hit the area about 6:00AM missed the park by about a mile. That storm did cut a 300 yard path through the meddle of my neighborhood and missing our house by about 200 yards. We did not get power back for 6 days and it took 14 days to get phone and internet service back.
Yesterday our local USATF official measured the course so we know exactly how long one full loop of the trail is. We also measured a short loop around the large lake. The 50K will consist of 10 laps of the full course and one short lap around the lake. This will also give a short alternative for the last few minutes of the 12 hour run. We may add an out/back section for those that want to go as far as possible.
We have decided to add two new age groups in the 5K. In addition to the 19 and under group there now will be 1st, 2nd and 3rd place awards for Middle School and 1st, 2nd and 3rd awards for High School students.
